OUR CHURCH HISTORY
The Early Days . . .
Our church began in May of 1945 in an old service station on the corner of 8th St. N.W. and Plain Dealing Road. Reverend A.C. Ayers, Sectional Presbyter, assisted the handful of believers in securing the property and in calling the Revenend M.L. Hall of Electra, Texas as pastor. Some of our earliest members were; Bertha & Calvin McGough, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Kennedy, Luther & Dovie Spencer, Dora Davis, Mary Peters, Voncil Dumas, Mrs. Bennett & her children Loise & Charles, and Mrs. Farmer. As the work progressed, plans were made to establish a permanent church building.
The first convert of the church was Mrs. N.G. (Sis. Maude) Vaughn. She joined the church the Sunday night after the charter members were listed. One of our current active members, Delphia (Granny Del) Balentine, is her daughter.
The small group purchased an old building that stood midway between Cullen and Springhill on Highway 7 (now US 371). It is interesting to know that chickens had been kept in the building and getting it cleaned and disinfected presented quite a problem. The "chicken house" was finally ready and the building was moved to the old service station site. By this time, the station and the little house behind it had been torn down. A parsonage was built behind the new church.
On March 13, 1947, the congregation conducted their first official business meeting. Our church was incorporated in 1948. There were fourteen charter members. Reverend Hall resigned in May of 1949.
Reverend C.A. McCrary of Texas was elected and assumed his duties on June 19, 1949. During his ministry, our church purchased vacant lots on the corner of 10 St. N.W. and Spring Street. The parsonage behind the church was moved to this location. Various proposals for rebuilding the church auditorium were considered, but finally abandoned due to the lack of parking space. Mary Brummett, Sue Wesson and Helen Caraway came and brought their families to our church in these years. Newlyweds, Walter and Violet Helms, moved to Springhill and began attending First Assembly. Years later, Brother Helms became a pastor and served at Haynesville First Assembly of God as well as Holly Ridge Assembly of God in Haynesville/Summerfield. Brother McCrary resigned the pastorate in April of 1951 after having served for 21 months.
In 1951, Reverend R.G. Hancock of Waycross, Georgia was called by the congregation as pastor. Our church began to grow rapidly under his leadership. Many recall revivals where people would stand outside and listen through the opened windows. Brother Cason, Brother Janway and Sister Greene were some of the evengelists in those days. Our church took steps to relocate with the purchase of two acres of property on the corner of Reynolds and 9th St. S.E., our present location. Construction began on this new building. In 1952, we sold the old auditorium on the Plain Dealing Road. The new auditorium was erected but lacked some finish work when Brother Hancock resigned in August of 1954. Brother Hancock went on the evangelistic field and lator pastored in Mississippi.
The Middle Age Spread . . .
Reverend Paul Palser of Big Springs, Nebraska, was elected Pastor in August of 1954. The church grew and prospered under his leadership. In 1955, the old church parsonage at 9th and Spring Street was sold and construction began on a new parsonage behind the new facility. Finish work was completed in the church auditorium and work done on the Sunday School annex. In November of 1959, Reverend Palser resigned the church to accept a missionary appointment to British Guiana.
The church then called Reverend G.D. Wilson of Haile, Louisiana. He assumed pastoral duties in January 1960. During Pastor Wilson's tenure, the Sunday School annex was completed. He resigned in the summer of 1966 to assume a pastorate in Jackson, Mississippi and later also served as Assistant Superintendent of the Mississippi District.
The church then called Reverend W.R. Craighead as pastor. Brother Craighead stayed with us until September of 1978. The church facility was remodeled and improved during his tenure.
Reverend Randall Huett followed the Craigheads in late 1978. Although Brother Huett was a young, first-time pastor, the church experiended growth and vitality. Brother and Sister Huett left in the fall of 1981 to pioneer a church in Sunnyvale, Texas. He has continued there as the Pastor of Life Community Church now with attendance well over 400.
Reverend Hoyh followed Brother Huett and stayed for one year.
More Recently . . .
In the fall of 1982, Reverend Phillip R. Sharp arrived at First Assembly from the mission field in the Philippines. During his years as Pastor, the church became more organized. The church rewrote its constitution and bylaws and experienced spiritual and physical maturing. Brother Sharp is held in high regard and many fond memories are still being discussed conserning his tenure. He resigned the pastorate late summer of 1986 to serve as Professor of Missionay studies at a Bible College.
In October of 1986, Reverend Robbie Yarbrough reported for duty as pastor. "Brother Rob" came from West Monroe where he was serving his second church as youth pastor. The church grew in number and stepped out in faith to complete a major remodeling of the education annex and build a new fellowship hall. Brother Rob and Anita brought a contemporary worship style into the church and vitality to the youth program. He left in August of 1994 to pioneer a church in Pearl, Mississippi.
That brings us to our present pastor, G.R. Collier. Brother Collier came from Jonesboro, Louisiana where he was serving as an associate pastor. The church has continued to grow under his leadership and has undertaken a major renovation and remodeling of the auditorium, upgrading and improving the grounds and parking areas as well as renovation of the parsonage into a modern church office complex. The church constitution and bylaws have been revised and updated and a comprehensive policy manual created. Children's ministries and Youth Ministries have been revitalized and an emphasis placed on Bible literacy and study as well as prayer ministries under his leadership.
